Alan Scott Powell, 62, of Morganton, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2024 after a courageous battle with ALS. Born in Burke County on April 29, 1961, he was the son of the late Paul Winford Powell and Ruby Nell Scott Powell. Alan retired in January from Siegwerk, formerly Environmental Inks, after 40 years of service. An accomplished athlete, he excelled at tennis, softball and golf. He recorded 2 hole-in-one's at Silver Creek Plantation. He was a strong Christian, a faithful member of Burkemont Baptist Church where he participated in missions, the Passion play and was very active in his Sunday School class. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Someone you could always count on.

He is survived by his sister, Paula Powell Crump; brother-in-law, Doug Crump; niece, Hollee Hord; nephew Darren Hord; aunt, Elaine Buchanan; girlfriend, Traci Skeggs; numerous cousins who he loved dearly and a host of friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Alan's life will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 with visitation at 11:00 am and service at 12:00 pm at Burkemont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will be in Glen Alpine Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed by the church on the church website or Facebook page.

The family would like to thank the members of Burkemont Baptist Church for all of the love and support they showered on Alan during his illness. Also thanks to Debbie McCurry for her kindness as his caregiver. To the staff of Magnolia Lane Nursing and Rehab Facility, there are no words to express our gratitude for all of the love and care given to Alan and our whole family. We are forever grateful.

Memorials may be sent to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Rd, Morganton NC 28655 or to ALS Association, P.O. Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037-0022

Alan was one of the finest men I’ve ever known. We were neighbors when we were just kids and remained friends since then. We worked together at Discount Furniture Galleries for a couple of years. Of course, we lost touch after graduation, and only shared an occasional passing, but every time we spoke, Al was always the same man I spoke to the last time. He was the same guy six months ago, when we saw each other while out to eat, as he was when we were 9 years old. He was never pretentious or arrogant in anyway. I am honored to have had Alan Powell as a friend in my life. Al was a man of honor, faith, and pride. And he was definitely a great golfer. It is hard to believe he’s left us. Heaven’s received a friend!

Although Alan and Paula are my first cousins, they really were considered my little brother and sister. We have been close our entire lives and losing Alan has been a tremendous blow to our family. We know where he is and also know we will meet again someday. We are grateful for his goodness and love.

Most people knew him as Alan. But Alan and I, well we just called each other Bil with one l, it was short for brother in law. His love for God was foremost in his life, he was a great mentor to me in my own spiritual journey as was his father Paul. To me Bil was my brother in the fullest sense. He would always be there if I needed him as I would for him. I watched him perform in the Passion Play and saw how he loved to glorify God. To me Bil was a Giant! Bil has gone home to Heaven and his pain from ALS is gone forever. I was just thinking tonight about Bil in Heaven that after he catches up with his mother, father and the Queen Mum-AKA Miss Lail that he might be asking where is the golf course? I love you Bil, I'll be seeing you again one day! Bil
