Alex William Karr, 83, of Lake Lure, NC, passed away on April 27, 2007 following an extended illness. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 3, 1924. Mr. Karr was a graduate of Washington High School in Milwaukee where he was a Wisconsin All-State football player. During WWII he served with the Navy in the South Pacific. He was wounded in action on Iwo Jima and received the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal for Heroism in action during the Solomon Islands campaign.

Alex graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison after which he was licensed as a certified public accountant in Wisconsin and North Carolina. Mr. Karr was also an appellate conferee with the Internal Revenue Service’s Midwest Region and taught accounting, federal tax law, and the CPA review course at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

In 1981 he retired to Lake Lure where he maintained an accounting practice and was elected to two terms as Town Commissioner. He was very active in the Lake Lure Community and served on the Boards of American Red Cross of Rutherford County, the Lake Lure Lions Club, the Hickory Nut Gorge VFW, and the Fairfield Mountains Volunteer Fire Department.

Alex is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Karr of the home; sons, Stephen Karr and wife, Pamela, of Winston-Salem, NC, David Karr of Milwaukee, and Sam Karr and wife, Denise, of Lake Lure; sisters, Eileen Rondoni of Menomonee Falls, WI, Barbara Kapel of Winneconne, WI; and grandchildren, Andrew, Nicholas, Jodie, and Mia.

A private memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his favorite charity, The Fairfield Mountains Volunteer Fire Department, 1415 Buffalo Creek Road, Lake Lure, NC 28746.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Clay Richardson for the extraordinary care he provided for Alex as well as the staff of Grace Hospital and Grace Heights in Morganton.
