Alice Pearline Hollar Lineberger, 97, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Chapel Hill, NC, after a period of declining health.
A long-time resident of Morganton, Alice was born on January 20, 1917, in Conover, NC, to the late Baxter Craig Hollar and Alice Isenhour Hollar. She was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters. Alice graduated from Catawba High School in Catawba, NC, where she met her husband of 57 years, Robert Max Lineberger. She and Max were married in 1939 and moved to Morganton in 1942, where he developed his career in insurance sales and real estate appraisals. Max died in 1996 at the age of 86. Alice moved to Carolina House of Chapel Hill in November of 2009 to be closer to her family.Alice pursued her own career for over 40 years as a sales associate, department manager and buyer of ladies' clothing for Burand's (later Spainhour's) of Morganton. For several years, she also helped manage the Burand's stores of Lenoir and Marion.She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Morganton, serving for many years as a secretary, treasurer and later president of the Wesleyan Fellowship. In her spare time, she enjoyed tending her rose and vegetable gardens, and she was a master craftswoman in needlepoint, knitting and quilting.She is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Lineberger Matthews, of Durham; two grandsons, Leonard Walter Matthews IV of Graham and Robert Lee Matthews of Pittsboro; and four great grandchildren.A celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Sossoman Funeral Home with Dr. John Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 untill 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
