Committal
Alton William Washburn, 95, of Morganton, NC went home to be with the Lord on the morning of February 7, 2022. Born August 7, 1926 in Holyoke, MA, he was the son of the late Ralph and Fannie (Clements) Washburn.
Al served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He and his late wife, Doris, were instrumental in establishing a Baptist church in Enfield, CT where they raised their three children. An avid student of the Bible, Al taught adult Bible classes and continued to do so in his retirement; first in Hendersonville, NC and later at Burkemont Baptist Church in Morganton. His narrative on the book of Psalms written while living at Grace Ridge Retirement Community continued to inspire his friends as he always shared the Word of God. He also served in several churches as a deacon and enjoyed singing in church choirs and various men's quartets over the years.
Al is survived by his three children: Susan (Douglas) Reider of Ontario, CA, Timothy (Darlene) Washburn of Aiken, SC, and Mark (Jeanne) Washburn of Fletcher, NC; a sister Mary Burt of Syracuse, NY, eight grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and many nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. David Mills officiating.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
