Alvin Whitfield Dukes

Alvin Whitfield Dukes, 90, of Morganton, NC, gained his heavenly wings on Friday, March 25, 2022.  Born in Cambridge, MS on June 30, 1931, he was the son of the late Albert and Frances Dukes. 

Mr. Dukes was the oldest member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.  He was a US Army veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne and 15th Constabulary SQD Border Patrol in Korean and Germany and retired as a first sergeant after 22 years of service from 1948 - 1969.  Alvin also retired from Southern Railroad after working over 20 years.  He enjoyed staying active and doing anything outside.  He most enjoyed taking care of his family and dogs.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Alvin is survived by his daughter, Tammy Dukes Beaver (John); son, Jeffrey Alvin Dukes; grandchildren, Tiffany Poteat (Marcus) and Marcus Holland (fiancée, Jessie); and great-grandchildren, Emma and Gabrielle Poteat.

In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Waddell Dukes; daughter, Clara Dukes Port; six sisters; two brothers; and numerous other family members.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Brian Buckner officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the US Army.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
