Anne Huffman Rudisill, 94, of Morganton passed away quietly Christmas morning at Grace Ridge Retirement Center due to natural causes.
She was the second of three children of Robert O. and Pearl T. Huffman of Morganton, N.C. She spent her entire childhood in Morganton and graduated from Morganton High School in 1937.
Mrs. Rudisill attended Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. from 1937 to 1941 where she earned a degree in music playing the piano and violin. Among several distinctions, she was President of the Honor Society and played violin as an alternate concertmaster in the North Carolina Sympathy Orchestra during her third and fourth semesters at Meredith.
Subsequently, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1941 to 1942 where he was awarded a second degree in music.
From Chapel Hill she went to North Hampton, Massachusetts and attended the Clark School for the Deaf where there were only three in her graduating class. Her studies led her to the Philadelphia School for the Deaf where she was hired to instruct remedial skills.
She transferred to Trenton, New Jersey and continued to teach for two years. In 1945, she was offered and accepted a supervisory position at the Florida School for the Deaf in St. Augustine. But the job was short-lived as she married Jeter C. Pritchard and moved to Chapel Hill while her new husband continued his studies.
Mrs. Rudisill eventually settled down in Baltimore, MD with her husband and two sons; Jay and Robert. She was an instructor at Park School, a private learning institution, for many years in addition to offering tutoring services for special needs children. She returned to Morganton in the late 1970's.
Mrs. Rudisill was preceded in death by her husbands, Jeter C. Pritchard of Baltimore and Albert P. Rudisill of Morganton and her older sister Dr. Pearl Scholz of Baltimore.
She is survived by her sons, Jeter (Jay) Pritchard of Morganton, Robert Huffman Pritchard of Spark Glencoe, MD; step-daughter, Carol Massey of Jasper, GA; younger sister, Roberta Johnson of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren, Robert Pritchard, Jr., Michael Pritchard, both of Baltimore and Sarah Kennedy of York, PA; great-grandson, Landon Pritchard of Baltimore; nephews, Fred Scholz of Cambridge, MA, Bob Scholz, Dr. Dick Scholz, and niece, Martha Cukor all of Baltimore, MD.
A memorial service to honor the life of Anne Rudisill will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2015 at Grace Episcopal Church with Father Gary Parker officiating.
