Arnold “Whitey” Benfield

Arnold “Whitey” Benfield, 75, of Morganton died Saturday, March 24, 2018.  Born in Burke County, NC on September 10, 1942, he was the son of the late Melvin O. Benfield and Zalie Chester Benfield.  Whitey was a graduate of Oak Hill High School and attended Appalachian State University.  He was a former employee of Broughton Hospital and retired from Whitey’s Used Cars at the old Giles Motors building.  Whitey also worked at Ingles.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Mr. Benfield is survived by his wife, Nancy Steele Benfield of the home; children, Deanna B. Bennett of Glen Alpine, Arnold “Ricky” Benfield, II and wife, DeRae, of Weaverville, NC, and Angela B. Chase and husband, Glen, of the Oak Hill Community; step-children, Bonnie Ledford Strowd and husband, Mike, of Pittsboro, NC and Charles “Chuck” Ledford of Morganton; grandchildren, Nathan Bennett, Christopher Bennett, Maddy Shuffler, Zalie Chase, and Corbin Chase; brothers, Oscar Benfield of Icard, NC and Rex Benfield of the Lake James Community; sister, Sharon B. Munday of Spruce Pine, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The celebration of Whitey’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul McClure officiating.
