Arthur J. “A.J.” Abernathy, 79, of Morganton died Thursday, April 9, 2015. He was born on January 20, 1936 in Burke County to the late Johnson K. Abernathy and Lillie Mae Courtney Hughes. Mr. Abernathy was a member of Bible Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed working with antique cars, playing the guitar, and woodworking.
Mr. Abernathy is survived by his wife, Helen Epley Abernathy of the home; and sons, James Abernathy and wife, Doris, Carl Abernathy and wife, Dede, Michael Abernathy and wife, Mary, and Steve Abernathy, all of Morganton, NC. Also surviving are six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a brother, Jimmy Abernathy of Morganton; and a cousin, Ruby Buff of Morganton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Loretta Smith, Faye Cline, and Lucille Shaw.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, April 13, 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Reverend Ricky Watkins and Rev. Thurston Greene officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
