Barbara Jean Capps Burgess

Barbara Jean Capps Burgess, 80, of Morganton, NC, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 6, 2016. She was born on August 3, 1935 in Rutherford County to the late H. Preston Capps and Percha Tabor Capps. Her passion in life was music. She sang in the First Baptist Church choir and the last 12 years, in the Mt. Home Baptist Church choir. She was gifted in music and sang and acted in many places and musicals. Several plays she was in included the Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Around the World in 90 Days and the King and I. She was also in many Christmas Cantatas. Mrs. Burgess worked in many of the uptown Morganton retail stores including working with her husband at the John Graham Department Store.
Mrs. Burgess is survived by her husband, Norman; sons, Dennis Guffey and Tim Guffey, both of Morganton, Donnie Guffey and his wife, Janice of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Alicia Goodman Guffey, Allison, Josh, Tim Guffey II, Spencer and Paige; great-grandchildren, Noah Goodman, Marlo Bachelder, Kearsten Guffey; step-sons, Ken Burgess and his wife, Emy, David Burgess and his wife, Robin, Brian Burgess and his wife, Rhonda; step-grandchildren, Andrew and Dustin Burgess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Preston Capps, Jr. and sister, Crystelle McBrayer.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30pm on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Mt Home Baptist Church. The service will begin at 2:30pm with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Home Baptist Church, 2272 Mt. Home Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
