Bertha Cook Stillwell

Bertha Cook Stillwell, 82, of Morganton, NC went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Born in Burke County, NC on December 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Cook and Vassie Hildebran Cook. Bertha was of the Baptist Faith. She lived most of her adult life in Charlotte before moving back to Burke County around 2003.Bertha is survived by two sisters, Rhoda Poe and husband, Roy, of Valdese and Joyce Carpenter and husband, Bill, of Connelly Springs, NC; a brother, Sidney Cook of Morganton; step-children, Virginia Godbey of Concord, NC, Penny Blaylock of Charlotte, NC, James Stillwell of Mt. Holly, NC, and Rev. Butch Stillwell of Asheville, NC; seven step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, James Stillwell; a son, Dean Brackett; four sisters, Versie Hullette, Sadie Mace, Flavia Ann Brown, and Edith Cook; two brothers, Larry and James Cook; and one step-daughter, Ann Miller.The funeral will be held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with Rev. Butch Stillwell officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Walker’s Chapel Baptist Church, 5292 Walker’s Chapel Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
