Surrounded by family and laughter, Betty Deviney Daniels, 89, of Morganton, NC, gently and peacefully returned to her eternal home on September 9, 2024, after a season of declining health. Originally from Rutherfordton and Cleveland County in North Carolina, Betty was the daughter of George Elliott and Ada Lydia Gold and the youngest of many doting siblings who preceded her in death. What a wonderful reunion she must be celebrating now!

Betty lived a beautiful and fulfilling life of family and professional service in Morganton after marrying her first great love, Robert (Bob) Earl Deviney. Betty lovingly cared for a family of three daughters, Lisa, Kathie, and Susanne; Bob’s many Chesapeake Retrievers, of whom Mitt was the clear favorite; and the many pets–including a horse–her daughters brought into her home. Widowed in midlife, Betty cherished and provided years of primary care to her second great love, Billie (Bill) David Daniels. And she joyfully filled her home with the laughter of more than a dozen grandchildren and later great grandchildren, all of whom she took great pleasure in spoiling.

Betty was the Chief Nurse of Broughton Hospital’s Youth Unit from its inception until her retirement. A long-time member of North Morganton United Methodist Church and, in her later years, of First Baptist Church of Morganton, Betty was a fixture in the life of her faith communities. She was a stalwart volunteer with FBC’s Food Service Committee and a dear member of the Agape Sunday School Class. She is remembered as a gentle and caring friend who was always eager to listen and quick to encourage.

Her chief joy in life was her beloved family. She is survived by daughters Lisa Mackay and husband Jeff, Kathie Zimmerman and husband John, and Susanne Eaton and husband Wayne; grandchildren Michael Mackay, Adam Mackay and wife Molly, Taylor Mackay and wife Daniela, John Zimmerman, Clinton Zimmerman and wife Becca, Rachel Eaton Baker and husband Adrian, Aaron Eaton and wife Michelle, and Justin Eaton; great grandchildren Franklin Mackay; Emmett Mackay; Luke, Will, and Emma Zimmerman; Eleanor (Ellie), Isabella (Izzy), and Oliver (Ollie) Baker; and Kinsley, Lincoln, and Landon Eaton. In addition to her immediate family, Betty is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Betty’s celebration of life will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Morganton on Wednesday, September 18, at 4:00 in the afternoon with the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00, also in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Casting for Hope (www.castingforhope.org) or the Down’s Syndrome Association of Greater Winston-Salem (www.dsagws.org).

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Nana Betty was such a sweet and beautiful soul. She always made everyone feel welcome and warm. For such a small, beautiful lady, she leaves an enormous void in the family and in our hearts. She will be greatly missed as we look forward to the day when we will see her again. Love you Nana Betty

Dear John Jr., John Sr., Kathie, Susanne, and Lisa. Such a sweet and humble lady. Her passing I know will leave a huge void. Peace and Blessings to you and extended family.

My condolences to Betty's family. I met her when I started working on the Adolescent Unit at Broughton. She was kind, knowledgeable, compassionate yet was able to supervise others well. I would run into her occasionally after she retired and she always had a smile on her face and a big hello for me. I hope that your memories of the goodness of her will never fade. Mine won't. -Kathy Allan-Calloway

So sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I have missed seeing her and meeting her at the mailbox for our talks. She was a very sweet Lady and neighbor and will be truly missed. Prayers of peace and comfort during this difficult time. God bless you all.

Betty was a member of our Agape Sunday School Class at First Baptist until she became unable to attend. She was a contributing member of our class, a cheerful and pleasant person with whom to work and study the Bible. She always cared about what was happening in the lives of others and it was obvious that she cared especially about her own family members. We will miss her greatly but are pleased that she is in her heavenly home now. Our sympathy is extended to her family at this time.

—Margaret Black

We send our deepest sympathy and love to Betty's girls and her grands. Becky, Sara, Robert, and Molly

Of all the wonderful words that describe Betty Gold Devinny Danials , only Love is needed. Betty was not only a giver of unconditional love she was a teacher to all walks of life of our heavenly fathers greatest gift. I've been truly blessed to have witnessed her love and to have learned from her through the years that love is what truly binds us together as one. She will be missed by many but everyone that was blessed to have crossed her path will carry her love in their hearts only to pay it forward. My love to her beautiful family.

I had the pleasure of working under Betty as a HCT part of the time I worked at Broughton Hospital in 1980. I admired her gentle and compassionate ways with the residents and staff that worked under her. Betty saw promise in me and was my biggest cheerleader (after my family) in my pursuit of a career in nursing. Words cannot express my gratitude for her encouragement. However, I could pattern my nursing career with her as my role model. My condolences to Betty's family in their loss. May God surround you with peace and comfort now and days to come.

Lisa, Kathy and Suzanne....and all the family. I was so saddened to hear of Betty's passing. She was one of the kindest and most caring persons I have even know. She was indeed beautiful inside out. All who knew here were blessed. I regret that all of our lives get busy and we don't see each other like we did when we were younger. May all the wonderful memories you have bring you peace and comfort. I know I will treasure the memories I have deep within my heart. May we all celebrate a life well lived....good job Betty!

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of Betty. She was so good to me and my family and she was a wonderful wife to my father. Betty and her family were always very welcoming to us. She treated me like I was her own son. I'm sad that I lost touch with her over the years through the struggles of life but I'll always remember her with love and respect.
