Betty Lou Sloan Mitchell, 86 died Tuesday February 7, 2012 following a period of declining health. She was born in Burke County on May 18, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Sam and Belle Hildebran Sloan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Emma Boger. Mrs. Mitchell graduated Valedictorian from Morganton High School in 1941, and in 1945 she graduated from Women’s College Phi Beta Kappa. She taught at North Carolina School for the Deaf for over thirty years.Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 67 years, James Conley Mitchell, Sr.; sons, David Sloan Mitchell of Houston, Texas and James C. Mitchell, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, of Jamestown, North Carolina; grandchildren, Jenny Vestal and Trey Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Spencer and Gracie Vestal all of Jamestown; brothers-in-law, Harold Mitchell of Valdese and Rev. Dr. J. C. Mitchell of Ocala, Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. The burial will be held at 10:00 Thursday at Burke Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be L. H. Kirksey, Lee Kirksey, Carl Kirksey, Johnny Beach, Herb Gibbs, and Boyd Smith.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Drawer 459, Morganton, NC 28680 or to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, 8330 Ward Pky.
