Billy C. Powell

Billy C. Powell, 87, of Morganton passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019.  Born in Burke County, NC on July 24, 1931, he was the son of the late Harlin W. Powell and Mae Culler Powell.  Billy was a member of South Side Baptist Church.  He retired from Drexel Furniture after 45 years of work and enjoyed gardening and listening to music.  Billy was a friend’s friend and never met a stranger.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Junnie Carlton Powell of the home; children, Dennis Powell (girlfriend, Betty Fisher) of Morganton and Peggy Holland of Maryville, TN; grandchildren, Joshua Holland, Patricia McMillian, and Jessie Webb; great-grandchildren, Jase and Abby McMillian; sisters, Maxine Lail (Hub) of Morganton, Judy Pendleton of Morganton, Sara Sherrill (Wilson) of Valdese, and Ruth Duckworth (Jerry) of Morganton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Powell; sisters, Nancy P. Payne, Becky P. Martin, and Joyce Powell; niece, Ashley Hall; and son-in-law, Bobby Joe Holland.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday, June 17, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will follow at noon in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Burt Williams officiating.  Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Morganton United Methodist Church Children’s Program.
