Billy Tellis Smith

Billy Tellis Smith, 78, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 following a brief illness. He was born on December 31, 1931 in Burke County and was a son of the late Tellis Herman Smith and Hixie Marie Poteat Smith. Mr. Smith was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church. He was an avid sports fan having played sports in high school and refereed high school football for a number of years.Surviving are his wife Modean Mae Tallent Smith of the home; his son, Michael Smith of Morganton; and sisters, Yvonne Turner of Morganton and Maxine Anderson of Augusta, GA.The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 234. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
