Burlin “Burl” Long, 79, of Glen Alpine passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 after several years of declining health. Born in Lincoln County, NC on April 1, 1936, he was the son of the late June Preston Long and Macie Long Cook and stepfather Samuel Cook. Burl was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Drexel Heritage Furnishings with 35+ years of service, working at plants 3 and 5. He loved to hunt, fish and garden. Also, he enjoyed Glen Alpine Football. Burl was an avid Duke basketball fan. Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nadene Huffman Long of the home; children, Barry Long and his wife, Kim, Mike Long and his wife, Pam, Kim Rudisill and her husband, Tony, and Dawn Dellinger and her husband, Donny, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Fallon Gardner and her husband, Justin, Dana Myers and her husband, Zach, Connor Rudisill, Dyson Dellinger, and Delaney Dellinger; great-grandchildren, Shelby Gardner, Taylor Hensley, and Titus Gardner; and brother, Danny Cook; and a brother-in-law, Edward Setzer. In addition to his parents, Burl was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Setzer. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, May 11, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Cline and the Rev. Chris Dale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
