Calvin Philip Hailey, 71, of Morganton died Friday, January 4, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. following a brief illness. Philip was born in Rockingham County on March 15, 1941 and was the son of the late Joseph Jackson Hailey and Bonnie Wilson Hailey. Philip graduated from the North Carolina School for the Deaf in 1962 and from Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C. in 1966. He then earned a Master’s Degree in teaching the hearing impaired from Lenoir-Rhyne College. Philip taught middle school math at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton for over 30 years. He was very active in many deaf organizations on the local and state level, and during the years after his retirement worked very hard to help establish the NCSD Historical Museum.Philip is survived by his sister, Mary Frances Hailey, and a niece, Diana Christine Sweatt, both of Eden, NC and a number of cousins, and extended family members. He also leaves his cherished friends and colleagues from NCSD and Morganton.The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2013 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Reverends. Tom Lineberger and Connie King officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Reidsville, NC (Rockingham County). In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the NCSD Historical Museum, 517 W. Fleming Dr., Morganton, NC 28655.
