Carroll H. Smith, 85, of Morganton died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Burke County on September 19, 1927 and was the son of the late Christopher Columbus Smith and Lurinda Smith Smith. He was a retired employee of Drexel Furniture Company and was a driver for Burke Transit. He was a member of Burkemont Baptist Church. He was former Deacon, Sunday School teacher, worked with children and youth and was a member of the Baptist Brotherhood. He was an avid reader, story teller and loved to watch Westerns. He loved helping his family and friends with all sorts of activities and projects. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, and father. Carroll always welcomed people and saw to their needs whether at his home, church, or elsewhere. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Sanford, Tellis, Cordell, Conley, twin brother Harold, and Bennett Smith; sisters, Mona and Myrtle Smith; 3 infant brothers; cousin, Raymond Carswell who was raised as Carroll’s brother; and his beloved dog, Zachary Toto.Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Darlene Mace Smith; son, Harlan Smith of Morganton; daughter, Janet Smith Childers and husband, Kenneth of Blacksburg, SC; 4 special grandchildren; step-grandson, Matthew Childers and wife, Sherri who are expecting Carroll’s step-great-granddaughter in June; a number of nephews and nieces; sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith and Iva Mace; and his beloved cat, Midnight. He was blessed with many special friends and neighbors who helped him through the years.The funeral will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills and Chaplain Janet Childers officiating with Carroll being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.
