Charles “Charlie” Frederick Moeller, 88, of Morganton, NC, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022.
He was born on April 24, l934 in Sikeston, Missouri. He was the son of Walter W. and Stella M. Moeller.
Charlie has one sister, Carolyn Louis Moeller (Mrs. Jerry Schwab) of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
He grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Central High School in 1952.
He was an Eagle Scout and received the Lutheran Boy Scout God and Country Award.
Charlie received a Bachelor of Science, Agricultural Economics with Minor in Rural Sociology and Master of Science in Community Health Development, University of Missouri (Columbia, Missouri).
He married Joyce Arleen Fylling of Crookston, Minnesota on September 17, 1960.
Joyce and Charles have two daughters. Debra Jane is married to Robert Martin and Pamela Jean is married to David Story. They all live in Morganton, NC. Charles is preceded in death by a son, Christian Frederick Moeller.
Debra and Robert Martin have three children; Noelle Martin, Jacob Martin and Gabby Miller.
Pamela and David Story have one son, Spencer Charles.
Charles and Joyce have five great grandsons and one great granddaughter.
Granddaughter Noelle and partner Dusty Burnette have four sons; Landon, Gaven, Aden and Grayson.
Granddaughter Gabby and husband Trever Miller have one son, Lynkin..
Grandson Jacob Martin and wife Summer have one daughter, Kennedy.
His first employment was as Director of Public Relations, North Central States Wool Growers Association, and then as Executive Assistant, to U.S. Representative Clark McGregor (Minn.).
His career continued by becoming Executive Director of the Northern States Cystic Fibrosis Foundation followed by becoming Executive Director of the Coastal Georgia Health Development Council.
While as Executive Director of the Coastal Area Health Development Council, he helped implement the second U.S. test site using army helicopters for civilian medical evacuation. Working with the U.S Department of Defense, they used a military medivac helicopter from Ft. Hunter, Georgia to respond to medical emergencies in SE Georgia.
In 1972 he accepted a position as Executive Director of the Regional Health Council of Eastern Appalachia (Morganton, NC) that transitioned to becoming the Western North Carolina Health Systems Agency. He retired as President of the Western North Carolina Rural Hospital Alliance in 1995.
During his professional career he served as President of the National Rural Health Planning Association; President of the North Carolina Health Services Development Association and as President of the Southeastern Association of Health Planning and Development Organizations.
He was committed to serving his church, New Covenant Lutheran Church. Commitments to his God included serving as a council member; Men in Mission Disaster Response program.
He was honored by North Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission to be an Honorary Life Member. Charlie also served as Lay Rector for a North Carolina Lutheran Men’s Via De Christo weekend and served on several Epiphany (youth) Prison Ministry Teams at the youth prison in Morganton.
For thirty five years he served as a member of the Salem, North Carolina Volunteer Fire/Rescue Association, serving as a fire officer and then as President of the Association. He chaired the Burke County Fireman’s Association and was member of the North Carolina State Emergency Response Team (SERT).
Charlie was active as a state and local organization leader. He served several years as Chair of the North Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster; for twenty years volunteered as a disaster response consultant with Church World Service Emergency Response (National Council of Churches) and as a disaster response consultant with FEMA.
Charlie also served as founding Board President, Burke County Hospice, board member, and member of Hospice of the Carolinas (North & South Carolina); Vice Chair, Burke County United Way; as a board member, Broughton Hospital Foundation and Chair, South Mountain Sierra Club.
He volunteered as hiking trail builder (Mountain to The Sea Trail) with the U.S. Forest Service and as a volunteer with the U.S. Park Service. Volunteering included serving with Burke United Christian Ministries and served the School Back Pack Food Ministries. He volunteered with Burke County Friends for Animals.
Military service was serving five years with the 175th Military Police, Missouri National Guard. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class.
Charlie’s hobbies included family camping, canoeing, fishing and gardening.
He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (KF4HFL).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Covenant Lutheran Church, Morganton, NC.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
