Charles "Charlie" Smith

Charles Sherman Smith, 81, of Glen Alpine, NC died Friday, June 27, 2014. Born August 5, 1932 in Gary, WV, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ethel Smith. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Seech Smith, and a daughter, Terry Faye Smith.

Charles served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until 1972 and was a veteran of the Korean War. From 1972 until 1992 he worked for New River Light and Power Company in Boone, NC. He was a member of Morganton V.F.W. Post #5362.

Charles is survived by his children, Ronald Smith and his wife, Elizabeth, Alan Smith and his wife, Denise, and Janice Gaines, all of Glen Alpine; grandchildren Kara McCutchen of Blowing Rock, NC, Ron J. Smith, Jr. of Gastonia, Amanda Presnell, Charlie Smith, Jennifer Thomas, Silas Smith, and Jamie Burris, all of Morganton, Jessica Smith of Midwest City, OK, Holly Smith of Connelly Springs, NC, Allison Jenkins of Asheville, NC, and Jeremy Burris of Thomasville, NC; seven beautiful great-grandchildren; a sister, Oreda Smith of Sarasota, FL.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. At 6:30 p.m. military honors will be performed by the N.C. National Guard.
