Charles Lindbergh Phillips, 91, of Morganton went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Born in Burke County, NC on June 20, 1927, he was the son of the late Cameron Will Phillips and Mary Elizabeth Benfield Phillips. Charles was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was of the Christian faith. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed reading books, gardening, and being in the outdoors.
Charles is survived by his wife, Mary “Sally” McMahan Phillips of the home; children, Rev. Kenneth Phillips (Andra), Kathy Greene, Tommy Phillips, Elaine Dale (Paul), and Mary Elizabeth Phillips, who is a granddaughter he raised as a daughter; grandchildren, Lisa Carpenter, Crystal Johnson, Danny Brackett, Christopher Brackett, Heather Harris, Vincent Shell, Tonya Shell, Amanda Hammons, and Andy Dale; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; special family member, Diane; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by an infant daughter; grandson, Dennis Phillips; brothers, Carl, Maran, Phifer, Hennessee, and Buck Phillips; and sisters, Ruth, Louise, Inez, Dolly, and Cornelia.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Revs. Harold Davis and Donna O’Neil officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the NC National Guard.
