Charles Netherton Collins

Charles Netherton Collins, 84, of Morganton, NC went to be with his heavenly father on Wednesday, July 15, 2015.  Born October 29, 1930 in Buncombe County, NC, he was the son of the late Hugh and Paralee Collins. 

Charles grew up in Asheville, NC where he graduated from Cecil’s Business College.  He was the co-owner of Carpet Service Company for many years until his retirement.  The family moved to Morganton 1966 so his son Steven could attend the North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD).  Charles was an active member of the parent’s organization (PTO) at NCSD and helped establish the chapel on campus.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Morganton and was committed to serve the Lord through music, education, and as a deacon.  During Charles’ involvement in the church community, he served as an interim choir director at Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. Collins enjoyed gardening, travelling, and music.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mr. Collins is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty “Jean” Collins of the home; children, David Collins and his wife, Kathy, Nancy William, and Ed Collins and his wife, Kim, all of Morganton and Steven D. Collins and Edward A. Singer of College Park, MD; and grandchildren, Brandon Collins and his wife, Alisha, Misty Dillingham and her husband, Josh, Robert Williams and his wife, Larren, and Stephen Collins and his wife, Sharon, all of Morganton, Amy Collins Kerwin and her husband, Bobby, and Micah Collins and his wife, Keely, all of Louisiana. His memory will be cherished by his great-grandchildren; his brothers, Bud Collins and his wife, Liz, and Dudley Collins and his wife, Joyce, all of Bradenton, FL, and Doug Collins and his wife, Edie, of Easley, SC; and his sister, Jerry Collins Neilan of Milton, FL.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and a granddaughter.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. in the parlor at First Baptist Church.  The memorial service will follow in the church sanctuary at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr., Dr. Bob Shepherd, and the Rev. Laura Roach officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690, First Baptist Church, P.O. Drawer 459, Morganton, NC 28680, or to Zion Baptist Church Baptist, 3396 Pea Ridge Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
