Charles Norman Kahler, 79, of Morganton, NC died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at his home while surrounded by his family. Born in Milam County, TX on December 22, 1933, he was the son of the late Ernest Kahler and Sedonia Schiller Kahler. Charles was a member of First United Methodist Church in Morganton. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, and the University of Texas Longhorns. Charles was a member of the Longhorn Marching Band and received his bachelor’s degree in biology from the university in just 3 years. He left Texas, but Texas never left him.Charles is survived by his wife, Ruth Secrest Kahler of the home; children, Dr. Jonathan E. C. Kahler of Mesa, AZ and Jeanne Kahler Schlichting of Morganton; a grandson, William Charles Schlichting; of Morganton; a son-in-law, Brian Schlichting of Durham, NC; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Kahler, Jr., Dr. Clayton Kahler, and Harlan James Kahler.The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. John Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Graveside services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron, TX at a later date.Memorial contributions may be made to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund at First United Methodist Church, 200 N. King Street, Morganton, NC 28655.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
