Charles Samuel Digh, 86, of N. Council Oak St. in Morganton died Monday, August 24, 2009 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born August 3, 1923 in Burke County, and was a son of the late Julius P. Digh and Flora Webb Digh. For many years, Charles was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Morganton High School where he played football. Charles worked for many years as a salesman at Sears in Morganton. Following his retirement, he sold pies and was affectionately known as the "Pie Man". Charles was a former member of the Burke County School Board and also a former trustee of Western Piedmont Community College.He is survived by a son, Charles S. "Chuck" Digh, II and wife, Vickie of Morganton; a grandson, Wesley B. Digh of Asheville, NC; a brother, Ned P. Digh of Fulton, MO; a sister, Estaleen Rockett of Morganton; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hines of Lincolnton, NC; a brother-in-law, Vernon Rader of Morganton; and all of his church family.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Alwran Digh; and a brother, Webb Digh.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Reverends Larry Thompson and Bob Deviney officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ridgecrest Cottage Fund of Calvary Baptist Church, 407 S. Green St., Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
