Charles "Shorty" Burdette Hughes

Charles "Shorty" Burdette Hughes, 77, of Morganton, NC went home to be with his Lord and Savior at his residence on Saturday, November 23, 2013. He was born February 27, 1936 in Yancey County, NC, to the late Rex Hughes and Helen Silvers Hughes. He was employed at Great Lakes Carbon Corp. for 38 years and was an accomplished carpenter and avid fisherman.He is survived by sons, Burdette Hughes and wife, Pat, Darryl Hughes and wife, Daphne, Doug Hughes and wife, Kim, Joshua Hughes all of Morganton, Caleb Hughes of the home; daughters, Norma Speagle and husband, Randy, Shannon Hughes, Adréanna Furr all of Morganton; grandchildren, Jason Hughes, Jimbob Hughes, Chris Hughes, Darlene Hughes, Crystal Hughes, Stephanie Robinson and husband, Daniel, Dawson Speagle, Beth Hughes, Bynum Hughes and wife, Lisa, Wade Shuping, Michael Shuping, Amanda Shuping, Jamie Mayfield, Donnie Webb; eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sister, Rita Faye Hughes Robinson and husband, Clarence of Winston-Salem, NC; brother, Keith Hughes and wife, Renee of Burnsville, NC; and special friend, Greg Hoyle.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Grace Cook Hughes, grandson, Chad Hughes and brother, Kenneth Hughes.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Faith Missionary Baptist Church with Reverends Terry Robinson, Wendell Parlier and Leonard Lindsay officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
