Charlie DeVinney, 58, of DeVinney Avenue, Morganton, NC died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton, NC following a brief illness. Born in Burke County, NC on January 6, 1951, he was the son of the late Guy L. DeVinney and Beulah Williams DeVinney. Charlie was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and was an avid fisherman. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, Pawpaw, brother, and loyal friend to many.He is survived by his wife, Dianne Newton DeVinney of the home; a daughter, Kathy D. Tunstill and husband, Tim, of Hickory, NC; grandchildren, Jon, Megan, and Will; a brother, James DeVinney and wife, Barbara of Morganton; sisters, Evelyn Brackett, Bessie Nichols and husband, Punch, Mary Smith and husband, Lee, and Christine Mosteller and husband, Jerry, all of Morganton; numerous nieces and nephews; close friends, Bob and Donna Gurley of Morganton, and many other close friends; and a special canine companion, Brittany.In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by brothers, Rob, Bud, and Paul DeVinney.The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Solid Rock Baptist Church with Reverends Clyde Penry and Tony Land officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of Bessie and Punch Nichols, 2734 DeVinney Ave., Morganton, NC. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses or to the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba County, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.
