Charlie Tate Stamey, 96, of Valdese, NC died unexpectedly on Friday, December 7, 2012. Born in Burke County, NC on February 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Midas Luther Stamey and Mary Addie Baker Stamey. Charlie was a member of Enon Baptist Church.He was a retired employee of Drexel Furniture Company where he worked for 47 years including many years as superintendent of Plant 3 & 5. He loved farming at his home and helping other neighbors with their gardens. Charlie was a founder, member, officer, and past president of the Triple Community Fire Department Board of Directors, where he served for 48 years. Charlie was also a founding member of the Triple Community Water Corporation, and he was a member and past president of the Woodman of the World Camp in Drexel. Charlie loved being in the outdoors where he would hunt deer and rabbits. For many years he kept beagles and participated in field trials and area beagle clubs.Charlie is survived by a large number of nephews and nieces and his caregiver, Kristi McGee.In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Lela Parella Lambert Stamey; brothers, Robert, Bennett O’Del, William Conley, Ervin Alexander, and Midas Willard; and sisters, Beulah, Mary Geneva, and Vera Azalee.The funeral will be held at 1:30 pm, Monday, December 10, 2012 at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.
