Claude Alvin Thompson Jr., 70, of Morganton passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 following a motor vehicle accident. Claude was born January 16, 1947 in Butler, Pennsylvania to the late Claude and Pauline Thompson.
He graduated from Butler High School in Butler, PA in 1964 and joined the Navy where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He worked under J. Edgar Hoover at the FBI before a career with the Bessemer Railroad where he worked for the next 15 years.
Claude went on to graduate from Thiel College and then to Western Carolina University to earn a Master’s in psychology. As a psychologist, he worked for the State of N.C. at Black Mountain Center, Broughton Hospital and retired from Foothills Mental Health.
Claude enjoyed searching for antiques at the flea market. He savored a good cigar, long rides on his four-wheeler, walks with his dog Lucy and spending his days with his partner of 27 years, Janis Sumlin at their homes in Burke and Ashe counties.
He is survived by his sons, Chris and Bryan; daughter, Heather; and brother, Kim.
In keeping with Claude’s wishes, no services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Burke County Friends for Animals, P.O. Box 1884, Morganton, NC 28680.
