Claude Arthur Carswell, 99, of Morganton, NC died peacefully Thursday, August 25, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lincoln County, NC on August 4, 1917, he was the son of the late Charlie Carswell and Carrie May Chapman Carswell. Claude was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and later in life, Sunnyside Baptist Church. He was known by many to be a kind, humble, and compassionate man. To all he knew and loved, to all he mentored, and especially to his family, his never ending acts of kindness will always be remembered. He was an avid farmer, bee keeper, auto-mechanic, and animal lover.
Mr. Carswell is survived by his sons, Harold Carswell and his wife, Sharon, and Leon Carswell and his wife, Olivia, all of Morganton; a daughter, Brenda Saunders and her husband, Donald, of Morganton; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Susie Penley of Morganton, Florence Carswell of Morganton, and Beatrice Shepherd of Hickory, NC; and his special long-term caregivers, Ginger Parker and Tiffany Lynn.
In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 73 years, Flavia Agnes Carswell; 2 sisters, Lula Green and Bertie Causby; and 2 brothers, Ellis Carswell and William “Herman” Carswell.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Combs officiating. At other times the family will be at the residence of Harold and Sharon Carswell.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
