Clyde Emmette ?Sam? Pollard, 84, of Morganton, NC died Thursday, October 13, 2011. Born in Burke County, NC on June 19, 1927, he was the son of the late John Andrew Pollard and Clara Virginia Garrison Pollard. Sam was a member of First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of WWII and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Sam retired from Morganton Dye and Finishing and was the former owner of Pollard?s Used Cars.Sam is survived by his brother, Kenneth Wayne Pollard and wife, Betty, of Glen Alpine; his fiancée, Edith Cobb of Morganton; his special niece and caregiver, Susan Houck of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.The family would like to express special thanks to Sam?s helpers and caregivers, Betty and Myra Ford.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Houck Pollard; brothers, Carl, Everette, Sr., Ralph, and Hicks Pollard; sisters, Pauline Perry, Louise Causby, and Frances Clarine Pollard; a half-brother, Dewey Pollard; and a half-sister, Ethel Rains.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine with Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors provided bv the NC National Guard. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 557, Glen Alpine, NC 28628. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
