Colene Rector McKee, 90, of Valdese, NC died Sunday, April 7, 2019 following several years of declining health. She was born in Burke County on November 17, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Rassie and Katie Coffey Rector. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hillard McKee; son-in-law, Guy Taylor; grandson, Ashley Williford; brothers, Rayferd and Joe Rector; and sisters, Magdalene Causby and Betty Cooper.
She is survived by a son, Greg McKee of Valdese; a daughter, Deb Taylor of Drexel; a brother, David Rector and wife Libby, of Valdese, sister-in-law, Nita Rector of Valdese; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Wellmon of Shelby; brother-in-law, Roger McKee of Boonville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Prior to her illness, Colene was an active member of United Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, Homebound Ministry Director and was a member of various church committees. Colene retired in 1989 as a licensed physical therapist assistant, having been employed at Western Carolina Center and several area nursing homes. She enjoyed quilting, vegetable and flower gardening and beach trips with family, siblings, and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 at United Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 12 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Bruce Piercy officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Heights Health and Rehabilitation Center for the love and care provided over the past several years. Cleta Phillips and Rebecca Sanders have also provided heartfelt care and friendship that brought much joy and many smiles to Colene.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Baptist Church, 2638 Messer Rd, Valdese, NC 28690, or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
