Curtis Eugene Avery, 76, of Morganton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. Born in Burke County, NC on March 15, 1943, he was the son of the late Alfonzo Avery and Stella May Whisnant Avery. He was a veteran of the US Army. Curtis was a store manager for Roses Department Stores and also worked for Drexel Heritage and Blackstone Furnishings. He enjoyed doing anything outdoors, but he especially enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Curtis is survived by his son, Chris Avery; daughter, Sharron Denise Hughes; grandson, Jeremy Hughes; brothers, Lloyd and Elmer Avery; sisters, Maxine Avery, Geneva Ross, and Malese Tilley; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Seagle Avery; and brother, Larry Avery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Ted Carswell officiating. Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard.
