David J. Stamey, 91, a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died Friday, April 15, 2011 following a period of declining health. He was born on November 1, 1919 and was a son of the late Lawrence Marvin Stamey and Mamie Janette Poteat Stamey. Mr. Stamey was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of the Burke County Schools. He was a lifelong member of Morganton First Church of God beginning on White Street in Morganton. He actively participated in the construction project for the new church on Summers Road. He also loved family gatherings and enjoyed gardening.Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Faye Whetstine Stamey; sons, Kenneth Stamey and wife, Nancy of Lenoir and Wayne Helms and wife, Patricia of Morganton; daughters, Gwendolyn S. Thompson and husband, Kenneth of Bladenboro, NC, Gayle S. Woodie and Andrea S. Keith both of Hickory, Victoria S. Price and Effie Mae Hester and husband, Jack all of Morganton; sister, Catherine Hatley of Drexel; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a number of great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Mr. Stamey was preceded in death by brothers, Harold, Alfred, Roy, and Andrew, and by sisters, Ethel, Annie Lee, Eliza Mae, Magalene, and Earlene.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2011, at Morganton First Church of God with Rev. Don Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Sossoman Funeral Home & Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour.
