Deanes Grier Short

Deanes Grier Short, 66, of Drexel, NC died Monday, September 17, 2012. Born in Burke County, NC on July 2, 1946, he was the son of Grier Samuel Short of Drexel and the late Hattie Mae Murphy Short. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Serving as a U.S. Marine during Vietnam, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Deanes received his associate degree in applied science from Western Piedmont Community College in 1972 and his Certification for Criminal Investigation Studies from Indiana University in 1974. He retired from the City of Morganton Police Department, Detective Division after which he owned and operated Short’s Cars, Inc.He was a 1970 state softball champion. Deanes was an avid golfer and was a member of Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. He was also a shriner and an active member of the local Masonic Lodge. He was an accomplished shag dancer. He placed first in several competitions and taught shag lessons at the Elks Lodge. Deanes was also a dedicated UNC Tarheel fan and volunteered with the Veteran’s Administration.Deanes is survived by his son, Deanes "Dean" Grier Short, II, and his wife, Cassie Barker, of Franklin, TN, and their children, Grier and Levi; a daughter, Lisa Spencer Short of Boise, ID, and her son, Griffin; his companion, Debbie Short; cousins, Louise Dockery, Jerroll Smith, and Tony Stamey; a dear close family friend, Newton Moore; and his faithful canine companion, Skipper.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2012 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and the Table Rock Detachment # 1197. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 222 South Church St., Suite 336M, Charlotte, NC 28202.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
