Dewey E. 'Bud' Kirby Jr. 84 of Morganton passed away Monday September 23rd. Born in Alderson, West Virginia on January 12th 1940. He was the son of the late Dewey E Kirby Sr. and Sylvia Smith Kirby. Dewey was a member of Burkemont Baptist Church of Morganton. As a skilled woodworker, he enjoyed building furniture and crafts that filled his home and those of his children and grandchildren. Dewey retired from General Electric, where he worked as an electrical technician.

Dewey was recently widowed from his spouse, Barbara Sue Kirby, in May of 2023 and he missed her dearly. In addition to his parents and Barbara, he was preceded in death by Grandson Chuck Bumgarner.

Family survivors include daughters, Deborah Crooks (Garry), Karen Kirby, and Dody Kirby (fiancé, Darrell); sons, James Kirby (Jeanie) and Joel Kirby (Mary Ann); and step-daughter, Lisa Karriker; grandchildren, Travis Crooks (Katherine), Dustin Crooks (Courtney), Logan Crooks (Jessica), Bryan Kirby, Bodie Johnson (Erin), Brittany Kirby, Lamara Parnell-Bryan (Isaac) Kelcey Bates, Kaleigh Bates, Antonia Aldana, Dylan White (Mirna) Lee Lackey, Siera Kirby, Katie Kirby, Amy Scott, and Jayla Gore; great-grandchildren, Blaikley Crooks, Avery Crooks, Nora Crooks, Justyce Swatzell, Amya Kirby, Tristan White, Alaina Lackey, Norah Rickerd, Lacey Jones, Bryson Scott, and Nightlyn Bumgarner; sisters, Lula Edith Bradley (Leonard) and Lula Mae Lynch; brother Timmy Kirby; brothers and sister-in-law, Bobby Farmer (Peggy), Georgia Farmer, and Donnie Talbert; and numerus niece and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Burkemont Baptist Church. The memorial service will follow at noon in the church with Rev. Dr. Eddy Bunton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dewey and Barbara Kirby’s name to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
