Don “Firebug” Smith, 76, of Morganton, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 3, 2023. He was born on December 7, 1946 in Cleveland County to the late Howard Lee Smith and Mary Gantt Goodman. He owned and operated Abby Cab Company, a well-respected transportation company, which he founded in 1987. Don was known for his strong work ethic and his unwavering commitment to his family. He was a true friend to all who knew him. Don was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a word of advice. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Marie Tallent Carver; second wife, Lori Ann Lail Smith; brother, Joe Gantt; grandson, Logan Edward Cline.

He is survived by a daughter, Loretta Marie Smith (fiancé, Michael Proctor); son, Andrew Smith; grandchild, Jordy Lee Smith (Melissa West); great-grandchildren, Hannah Smith, Haddie Smith, Farrah Smith, Mason Cline; several nieces; and faithful companion, Roxy.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Morganton Freedom Church of God on Hwy 181 in Morganton, NC.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
