It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy Whisnant, beloved grandmother, mother and friend, who left us all too soon September 4, 2024 at Amorem Hospice of Valdese. A native of Pike County, Kentucky, born November 17, 1937, to Theodore and Stella Garris Anderson, she was one of eleven siblings.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Wilbur Whisnant; daughter, Julie English; brothers, Donald and Johnny Anderson; sisters Betty Booze, Reda Bruner, and Joyce Rose.
Known affectionately as Maw Maw, standing at just five feet tall, she was a true force to be reckoned with and had a spirit as strong as concrete. Dorothy had a passion for gardening with flower beds that were the envy of all the neighbors. Her love for family was immeasurable, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Affectionately dubbed by some as "Spicy Maw Maw", her indominable spirit and fierce love will be remembered fondly by her family and friends. As we honor her memory, we celebrate the remarkable life she led and the joy she brought into our lives. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Terri Whisnant Carlton; grandchildren, Derek Branch (Marisa), Brandi Branch, Mason Carlton and Jessy Piercy (Josh); great-grandchildren, Noah Branch, Dalton Woody, Connor Branch, Rylan Carlton, and Jaden Piercy. She is also survived by her siblings, Mary Rothermel, Juanita Webb, Eddie Anderson, Charlene Anderson and Ricky Anderson; along with many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dorothy's dedicated and loving caregiver, Kristin Gath.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mammaw was more precious to me than anyone would ever know. I’ve been through great times and some more difficult with the time 20+ years I’ve been around. She was one of the most loving personalities I’ve experienced. She was the mortar that held this family together. I loved her as if she was my own grandmother. She cared and provided for this family and more including myself. I don’t think I could ever meet anyone more willing to do that than Mawmaw. I will never forget her and what she accomplished with her fortitude. I will always cherish the memories and time I had with her. She will be missed by anyone who really knew her … I love and miss you so much. SMSjr
