Dorothy Bason Burke

Dorothy Bason Burke, 85, of Morganton, NC died Monday, November 14, 2011 at Grace Ridge Health Care Center. Born in Caswell County, NC on August 11, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Murphey Bason and Martha Eliza Hatchett Bason. Dorothy was a member of St. John?s Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC. She was a dedicated second grade teacher at Providence Day and Charlotte Latin Schools.A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Carolyn ?Lyn? Hart and husband, James, of Bethesda, MD; a son, John J. ?Jay? Burke, Jr. and wife, Catherine, of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, John G. Cumming, IV, Emily Burke, and Megan Burke; and a sister, Carolyn Bason Long of Washington, D.C.In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, John James ?Jack? Burke, Sr., and a brother, William H. Bason.

A celebration of Dorothy?s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 18, 2011 at St. John?s Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer?s Association, Western NC Chapter, 31 College Place, Suite D-320, Asheville, NC 28801.Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
