Doshia Johnson Newton, 97, of Morganton died Saturday, January 6, 2018. Born in Rutherford County, NC on October 11, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Royal Moton Johnson and Dovie Brackett Johnson. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and of the Aldersgate Sunday School Class until her later years. She retired from Shadowline after 40 years and then worked as a dedicated in-home caregiver with Direct Care for 20 years. Doshia will be remembered in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.
Mrs. Newton is survived by her daughter, Brenda Simmons and husband, Gary, of Kingsport, TN; son, Andy Newton and wife, Terry, of Morganton; grandson, Scott Simmons and wife, Stephanie, of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hannah Simmons; sister, Muriel McNeilly of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Doshia was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn A. Newton, Sr.; brothers, Clyde and Edward Johnson; and sisters, Mozelle Byrd and Isabelle Pruett.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 12 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
