Earl Macon Smith, 82, of Morganton died Sunday, August 17, 2014. He was born in Burke County on December 20, 1931 and was a son of the late Gravis Marshall Smith and Beulah Hawkins Smith. Mr. Smith was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a plain and simple man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, was a self-employed saw miller, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha York Smith of the home; his children, Dennis Earl Smith and Teresa Crites and her husband, Gary; granddaughter, Wendy Hudson and husband, Andy; great-grandchildren, Mylie Hudson and Roland Hudson; his brothers and sisters, Mattie Poteat, Gerald Smith, Max Carroll Smith, Edith Riles, and Ruth Brittain all of Morganton; his best friend, Buster Garrison; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Goins.
Funeral services will be held in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 with Rev. Bob Deviney officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. At other times the family will be at the home on Enola Road.
