Edith Berry Waddell, 80, of Morganton, NC passed away Monday, March 19, 2018. She was born March 14, 1938 in Burke County, NC and was the daughter of the late Alvin Ward Berry and Floy Ross Berry Propst. Edith was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Salem High School and Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree. Edith also received her degree as a Registered Nurse at NC Baptist Hospital. She had a year of study at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. In the summer of 1962 she lived in Nigeria as a missionary with Baptist Student Union. She was employed at Broughton Hospital in 1966 and Western Piedmont Community College in 1969. Then she stayed at home to raise four children and was Director of Religious Education at St. Charles for over ten years. She returned to work at Western Piedmont and Broughton and retired in 1998 to enjoy her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step-father, Melvin Propst; brothers, Ralph and James Berry; sister, Mary Ellen Wagner; infant sister, Helen Berry; and grandson, Dylan Chapman.
She is survived by her husband, George Waddell of the home; children and their spouses, Gordon and Cheree Waddell, Geoffrey and Samantha Waddell, Emma and Leo Watson, Jr., and Mary and Chad Smith all of Morganton; grandchildren, Kayla Waddell, Anthony, Drew, Travis, and Avery Watson, Zachary and Gavyn Smith, and Grayden and Jenna Waddell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Father Kenneth Whittington and Rev. Mr. John Martino officiating. Burial will follow at Waddell-Chapman Cemetery. Union St., Morganton, NC 28655.
