Effie McNeely Thorne, 93, of Hickory, NC, died Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Born in Cleveland County, NC on July 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Julius Marvin McNeely and Mary Earl McNeely.
Effie was a member of St. John Baptist Church and worked as Hamrick’s. Earlier in her career she worked as daycare parent. She loved camping with her family, going to seafood restaurants, and playing board games. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed teaching her family how to cook.
Effie is survived by her son, Reuben Thorne, Jr.; grandsons, Jason Thorne and Stephen Thorne; great-grandchildren, Brysen Thorne, Brayden Thorne, Nate Thorne, Natalia Thorne, and Nova Thorne; and sisters, Lillie Bolick and Mamie McNeely.
In addition to her parents, Effie was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Merlin Thorne, Sr., son, Roy Thorne; and sisters, Hettie Roberts, Ruby Huffman, and Vernie Huffman.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Baptist Church Cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

You was a big part of my life as I was growing up. I will never forget the times of talking with you and giving me talks about needing to behave and minding my mother and to always check in with her. Beautiful lady inside and out! Loved talking to her when over visiting with my friends Steven and butch!!! And many laughs when I painted inside for her and Jr! She will be missed by so many and I'm blessed to have been allowed the chance to have met such an amazing caring and wonderful person as miss effie!! Prayers to the family and friends!
