Elease Abernathy Powell, 95, of Valdese, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 9, 2017. She was born in Burke County, NC on January 4, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Foster R. Abernathy and Bertha Mace Abernathy. Elease was a member of Morganton First Church of God. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. Elease loved gardening, canning, planting flowers in her yard and feeding the birds. She especially enjoyed cooking special meals for her family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Emanuel Powell; sons, Steve and Randy Powell; and two brothers.
She is survived by a son, Larry Powell and wife, Carolyn; grandchildren, Curtis Powell and wife, Rena, Kim Byrd and husband, Kenny, Caleb Powell and wife, Kelly, Aaron Powell, and Elizabeth Walker; great-grandchildren, Lexie Powell and Ashley Powell; one brother; five sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Morganton First Church of God. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon at the church with Reverends Jon McDevitt and Don Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690 or to Morganton First Church of God, 675 Summers Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
