Elizabeth "Lib" Bailey Carpenter

Elizabeth "Lib" Bailey Carpenter, 75, of Morganton died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Valdese Hospital following a period of declining health. Lib was born in Burke County on July 3, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Roy Homer Bailey and Hazel Beatrice Garrison Bailey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd "Shorty" Carpenter, and by a brother, Ralph Homer Bailey, Jr. Lib and Shorty owned and operated L. & S Grocery for many years. Lib also worked at M & C Auto Parts and retired from Grace Hospital. She was a member of Zion Memorial United Methodist Church and of U. M. C. Women.Surviving are her daughter, Lisa Whisnant and her husband, Dennis; her only grandchild, Heath Whisnant who was the joy of her life; and a special friend, Harold Prewitt, all of Morganton; a sister-in-law, Myra Bailey Smith; nieces and nephews, Lois Baker, Barbara Davis, Michael Bailey, and Doug Bailey; and a number of cousins.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Zion Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. George Williams officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Lisa and Dennis Whisnant, on Chism Dr. in Morganton.
