Elizabeth Mahoney Bowers

Elizabeth Mahoney Bowers, 104, of Grandview Court, Morganton, NC died Friday, October 12, 2007 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Born December 19, 1902 in Greenville, TN, she was the daughter of James Marsh Mahoney and Ruby Mae Dodd Mahoney. Mrs. Bowers received a degree from Marion College, Marion, VA, a B.A. degree from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, VA, and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She worked for four years with the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) in Bristol, VA and she was a retired teacher from the Richmond, VA school system. While a resident of Richmond, she was a member of many organizations. She was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton, NC.Surviving are a son, Robert Mahoney Bowers of Cleveland, GA; a daughter, Carolyn B. Atwell of Morganton; granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth S. Atwell of Pierce, CO and Victoria Sandiford and her husband, Darrell of Chapel Hill, NC; great grandchildren, Kenneth, Kylie and Kale Stegner and Kyle and Amara Sandiford.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2007 in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor thirty minutes before the service. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2007 in the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Structure Preservation Fund, 100 Silver Creek Rd., Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
