Ellen Maurine Cox Pruitt passed on March 2, 2017 after a short period of declining health. Ellen was born on October 23, 1929 in Peru, Indiana.
Ellen married Jack Edward Pruitt on June 8, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ellen and Jack were married for forty-nine loving years. He preceded her in death.
Ellen was also preceded in death by parents, Mary and Theron Cox; daughter, Laura; and sister, Marcia.
She was a classic, elegant beauty and was always adorned with her trademark hairstyle, (a perfectly coiffed bun). Poised with grace and sophistication, her family has always admired her strength and dignity. She was a strong, independent woman with a sharp mind and kind spirit.
Ellen graduated from Butler University, Ohio State, and the University of Maryland. Ellen loved taking a variety of classes to enrich her skills and knowledge. She was known as a “professional student” by her family.
After retiring as a librarian from Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, Jack and Ellen had the luxury of traveling the world; from here to Japan and everywhere in between. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling as a Road Scholar around the United States.
Being a librarian, she had an authentic love of books and reading. In her lifetime, she had acquired an extensive collection of classic literature and novels. If she wasn’t reading, she enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles, and Sudoku.
She loved the fine arts and to be surrounded by culture – theater, Opera, ballet, and museums – she appreciated it all.
Ellen is survived by daughter, Pam Hollar and husband, Charlie from Morganton, NC; son, Jack Pruitt and wife, Peg from Fort Hill, PA; grandson, Jack Pruitt and wife, Megan from Lake Linganore, MD; grandson, Steven Hollar and wife, Rissa from Morganton, NC; granddaughter, Ashley Franklin and husband, Robbie from Morganton, NC; grandson, John Pruitt and wife, Brittney from Fort Hill, PA; granddaughter, Christine Wilhelm and husband, Randy from Frostburg, MD; great-granddaughter, Mia Hollar; and great-grandsons, Luke Pruitt, Jaxson Hollar, and Jack Pruitt.

At her request, no public service will be held. A private family event will be held in her honor.
“The hardest part of losing someone, isn’t having to say goodbye, but rather learning to live without them, always trying to fill the void, the emptiness that’s left inside your heart when they go.” - Unknown
