Eller Mae Hurt Simmons of Morganton, NC died at the age of 90 at Burke Hospice House. She was born in Morganton on July 13, 1926 to J.A. Hurt and Rosie Mooney Hurt, both of whom proceeded in her in death.
Eller Mae was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a member of Asheville Street Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and WMU director for many years. Eller Mae worked at Shadowline and Western Carolina Center. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and quilting.
Eller Mae is survived by daughters, Irma Lee Simmons of the home and Linda Fisher of Morganton; sons, Wayne Simmons and wife, Pam of Morganton, Gary Simmons and wife, Sharon of Union Mills; sister, Mary Anderson of Morganton; and sister-in-law, Carol Hurt. She is also survived by grandchildren, Wendy McGavock, Ernie Simmons, Amy Radford, Corey Simmons, Robing Guzman, David Simmons, and Ashley Kahl; great-grandchildren, Lawson, Noah, Charlotte, James, Ella, Alexis, Tristan, Emma, Matthew, and Jaxon; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Eller Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Simmons; son, Tommy Simmons; sisters, Irene H. Sides, Dorothy Grady, and Jean Lane; and brother, J.A. Hurt.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 24, 2016 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will held 2:00 p.m., Sunday in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Charles “Bud” Harmon officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
