Elmer Waites Jones, 93, of Morganton, NC went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Born in Avery County, NC on July 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Walt Jones and Julie Butler Jones. He was of the Baptist faith.
Elmer was a U.S. Army sharpshooter during WWII. He served in Tunisia, Sicily, the landing at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe and earned seven Bronze Service Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead, a Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star Medal, and a Purple Heart. He fought under General Patton.
Elmer is survived by his sons, Jerry Jones and his wife, Kathy, of Icard, NC and Darrell Ray Jones of Morganton; daughters, Sheila Holland and her husband, Mark, of Greenville, SC and Debra Deal of Morganton; grandchildren, Scottie Lee McCracken, Petra McGill, Christopher Wingard, Vernon Lee Brown, Erica Jones, and Allen Jones; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Rev. Frank Jones of Roan Mountain, TN.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his son, Danny Lee Jones; his daughter, Freda Kay Jones; brothers, Ed, Jess, and Ira Jones; and sisters, Frances Buchanan and Emmy McGinnis.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Ed Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
