Ethel Norman Whitener, 88, of Burkemont Rd., Morganton, NC passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Burke Palliative Care Center. Born on March 5, 1922 in Morganton, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Etta Norman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Whitener; brothers, Fred, Bill, and Jim Norman; and sisters, Lucy Caraway and Marjorie Hopper.Mrs. Whitener was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where she was active for many years in the Salem United Methodist Women. She retired from American Greetings where she loved her work as a merchandiser. She was known as a wonderful cook and shared her wonderful meals with many friends and relatives.She is survived by two sons, Gary Whitener and Wynn Whitener and wife, Lora, and a daughter, Doris Ingram and husband, Harry; two grandsons, Zane and Cameron Whitener; a sister, Ruby Turner; a brother, Sam Norman; caregivers, Pat Brittain, Mildred Barlow, and Kimberly Poteat; and many nieces and nephews.The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., today, Friday, October 15, 2010 at Salem United Methodist Church with Reverends Mark Conforti and Donald Freshour officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service.
