Faye Rochelle McGhinnis Sloan, 86, of Morganton, NC, was granted her wish by God and gained her angel wings on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

Born in Burke County, NC on January 14, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Samuel “Daddy Sam” Franklin Carswell and Ruthie Mae Hawkins McGhinnis Carswell.

Faye was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who loved her family dearly. She kept children in her home for over 30 years. This gave her the ability to live her lifelong dream of being a teacher for several generations of children. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the beach. Faye was a friend to everyone and never met a stranger.

Mrs. Sloan is survived by her husband of 64 years, Joe Sloan; son, Jeffrey Edward Sloan (Nina); grandchildren, Callie Sloan, Juliana Sloan-Guinn (Jeremy), and Suzanne Phillips; and great-grandson, Jace Emerson Guinn.

In addition to her parents, Faye was preceded in death by her grandson, Jeremy Phillips; brother, Bob McGhinnis; and sister, Janey Jugar.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, August 5, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kenny Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Amorem Hospice (amoremsupport.org/donate).

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

We loved Faye so very much! She from day one made us feel so welcome and loved. We will never forget her wittiness, love, kind and pure heart. She was one of a kind for sure. Prayers for the families and for all who knew her. She will surely be missed. Two of my favorite things about Faye was her beautiful smile and her contagious laugh.

She was the best. I always loved seeing and talking to Faye. Such a gentle heart and spirit. I'll always remember how she and Daddy cheered on the Redskins and how Mama gave her Daddy's Redskin cap after he died. The world is a little less bright today because of her absence. My love to you, Joe and Jeff, and to all the family who will miss her.

Dear Joe and Jeff ~ Faye is a big part of my fondest memories growing up on Poplar/Coulter Streets. She was so kind to all the neighborhood kids and always had time for a chat with us. She once asked me to sit with the children she kept, so that she could take Jeff to a doctor’s appointment. That was a big deal for me, in that she trusted me with a very important job! Faye was certainly a most rare jewel. Please know that I’m thinking of you and your family. Most sincerely, Gay J. Hoover
