After 80 years of faithful service to the Lord, Fern Benton Norman of Morganton, NC has gone to be with Him. Born on June 17, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Horace Benton and Annie Mae Benton. Fern worked as a teacher’s aide at Salem Elementary School for over 25 years. She was a member of South Mountain Baptist Church and attended services at Missionary Ridge Baptist Church. She loved the ladies of her Sunday school class and her teachers, Teresa Austin and Brenda Epley.Mrs. Norman is survived by her children, Keith Edward Norman and his wife, Sharon, Linda N. Smith and her husband, Pete, James Edward Norman, and Martin Eric Norman and his wife, Shannon; grandchildren, Chad D. Norman and his wife, Sue, Nicole Gardina and her husband, Louie, Jammie L. Hunter and her husband, Eddy, and Summer Fern Norman; great-grandchildren, Sean P. Hunter, Mira Belle Linda Gardine, and twins, Eva and Will Norman; a brother, Loy Benton; a sister, Artie Mae Benton; a number of nieces and nephews; and Harriet Norman and Ruth Cook, who were very special to her.In addition to her parents, Fern was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Edward Norman; and a brother, Horace Benton, Jr.The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Missionary Ridge Baptist Church with the Reverends Al Tinnin, Donald Lovelace, and Jack Moses officiating. Burial will follow at South Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral.
